Maine Vacation Part II: Mount Washington

James and I have hiked Mount Washington in New Hampshire several times together, mostly in winter. It's a special place for us because it's where we got engaged. We wanted to take Cece to Mount Washington but it's probably a few years too soon for her to hike it herself so instead we took to historic Cog Railway up to the top of the 6288 foot summit. The mountain was about an hour and a half from the cabin in Maine so it was an easy day trip (see Maine Vacation Part I).

It took about 45 minutes to reach the top. A much different experience than hiking it, but fun and interesting all the same.

It was a clear day at the summit, not something you can always count on in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, so we had beautiful views in all directions. I have to say though, I prefer the mountain in the winter. It was a bit strange to summit via railroad and top of the mountain was buzzing with people everywhere. Some were wearing sun dresses and high heels while others were in the midst of hiking the entire Appalachian Trail. Still, it was nice to show Cece the mountain and we even saw two proposals while we were up there!

We'll be back again. It's hard to stay away. Hopefully next time we'll even be able to hike the mountain as a family!

  1. I've been to the top of Mt. Washington via car a few times. The train option looks really fun, especially for kids!
